When you’re on a budget and the microwave and freezer combo are your new best friends there are so many yummy things you can make. Here are some ideas:
Nachos This is a classic and for the most part it simply involves tortilla chips, cheese, and a microwave. Classy and cheap for any occasion. Add fixings accordingly. Queso and Dip This is a great simple snack for a party or sporting event, just make sure to nuke the dip in a colorful bowl first for a touch of sophistication. It also helps when you pick up the good dipping chips as opposed to the ones that break on contact with the dip. Picking the chips out of the dip is no fun and totally unhygienic. Frozen Chicken Wings Most of the time these come in bulk and have more varieties in the super market than anywhere else. Make a plate of three different flavors and have your guests guess which is which; whoever wins gets a prize like a bottle of ranch dressing. Chicken Pizza Tacos Heat up chicken, spread pizza sauce in the bottom of a taco shell with melted cheese and apply chicken to the bottom. Use whatever else you have lying around for more topping choices. It’s a unique and entertaining meal that will definitely be better than the unidentifiable meat in the cafeteria. Ranch and Cheese Hot Dogs These are just delicious and a neat alternative to ballpark franks you get at baseball games. Take your favorite variety of cheese and sprinkle it liberally over cut up hotdogs, microwave and then pile on ranch. Enjoy. The administrations in colleges across the country are known for their stingy attitude towards pets and any kind of non-human companion for students. Although, truth be told, sometimes your roommate can classify as an animal all on their own. However, these rules make procuring a fluffy friend a difficulty, so here are some basic rules to adhere to when bending the species law. If it can’t be under water for two minutes you’re not allowed to have it. This is the main rule I’ve heard and had to adhere too. If you can strap your cat with goggles, flippers, and a snorkel, go for it. Otherwise, a turtle is an awesome bet. They love the water, they are cheap, and your biggest expense is their tank which can be set up anywhere in the dorm with an outlet. Plus they’re way more fun to watch than fish and they don’t eat each other. Bonus. Along those lines, hermit crabs rock! You can unleash them on your roommate’s bed when they’ve been ridiculously annoying. They are also easy to keep, easy to feed, and they accessorize themselves everyday! If you don’t like pinchers, try a tame lizard like a leopard gecko or any other tiny lizard. Although these guys can be a bit expensive because most need heat lamps, their tanks are easy to hide in the closet when you surprise RA inspections and they can’t get too far, too fast, so if you let them out to play they won’t get lost. Whatever you do I don’t recommend getting a tarantula or other type of spider or bug because they require a lot of attention and if they get lost, your money is down the drain after they get squished. If you’re going to attempt a cat or dog, please, please, please, at least have a house on campus! There is no way an animal that self-aware will stay quiet for long in a regular dorm and it will wake up all your neighbors. Don’t spend money on something cute and cuddly, sneaking it out of the dorm for vet visits will be like cramming for a trigonometry test at 4 am when you have it at 8, it’s hard and it won’t happen. So, if you’re going to have a pet companion on campus, have fun with it, make it affordable and make sure your roommate is okay with it. You don’t want your purchase to go to waste after you and little Harry have bonded. This is a guest post from Erik, a freelance writer, editor of the Start School Now's website. College students can often times become incredibly busy between classes and extracurricular activities, and sometimes they may need an extra boost to push through obstacles which is where energy drinks come in handy. Here’s a list of some popular energy drinks that keep college students going when their workload gets rough. Crystal Light Energy For students more concerned with healthy living, this no carb, low sodium drink is perfect. There are only five calories and the same amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee. It also tastes great in a variety of fruit flavors. Monster The ultimate in energy drinks. Period. Just don’t drink one after the other, that ends really badly and with their price, you don’t want to give it to the toilet for free. Redbull The most popular of energy drinks, mix with vodka to be both trendy and totally smashed after exams. You’ll also join the celebrity elite of Britney Spears, Tara Reid, and Paris Hilton on their preferred caffeine train. Sobe Adrenaline Rush This a light and fluffy citrus drink with a kick that you feel slowly throughout your day instead of being bogged down in class with a sugar crash. It’s also cheaper and more drink for your dime. Starbucks Double Shot This is a new college staple, all of the hit of a shot of espresso with a milky buffer for those unaccustomed to Starbucks. It’s also way easier to buy on campus instead of spending gas money. Starbucks Frappuccino A sweet and simple drink, it’s the typical frap minus all the frills and whipped cream. Good for breakfast, but bad for those who enjoy indulgence with their coffee during a three-hour lecture. Also, doesn’t come with a fun straw to play with during a boring class. Tab This drink has been around for ages and it shows in consistency of taste and style. The can oozes hyperactive happiness and the liquid contents inside aren’t bad either. It also has very little sugar, carbs, or sodium which is good for the self-conscious freshman keen on keeping off the freshman fifteen. Rockstar The taste of this drink isn’t amazing, but the hours you’ll spend awake and functioning better than your professors makes the purchase worth it. It packs so much taurine and other fun ingredients one is all you need for the whole day. You’ll be philosophizing like Plato in no time and questioning the boundaries of Post-Modernism with the best of them. No Fear These are half natural ingredients, half of everything your used too as a caffeine consumer. Plus it comes in a pretty package you can store over your homemade beer can pyramid, score!
